Who Should Consider STD Testing?

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to STD testing, but there are a few general guidelines based on age, activity, and health history. Our providers can walk you through what makes sense for you, but here are a few examples of when testing is typically recommended:

  • You have new or multiple sexual partners
  • You’re experiencing symptoms like unusual discharge, pelvic discomfort, or itching
  • You’re planning for pregnancy or currently pregnant
  • You’ve had unprotected sex or a partner with a known infection

Anyone who is sexually active can benefit from testing. Younger women who are sexually active, especially those who have multiple partners, should be tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia regularly.

All women, regardless of age, should be tested at least once for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), using a quick blood or saliva test. In addition, women born before 1965 should ask about hepatitis C screening. These recommendations are based on both national guidelines and our team’s experience helping women prioritize their reproductive health.

What STDs Can Be Detected?

Our offices provide access to a full panel of testing options. Along with the STDs mentioned previously, you can turn to us for diagnoses, such as:

  • Hepatitis B
  • Syphilis
  • Trichomoniasis
  • Herpes (HSV)
  • HPV

Each test is quick and confidential, with results typically returned within a few days. Your health records are confidential, and your testing experience will be handled with professionalism and discretion.

What Happens If I Test Positive for an STD?

If you test positive for an infection, the next step is support, not shame. Many infections are easily treated with medication, and even long-term conditions can be managed with guidance from your provider. Your provider will walk you through what to expect, how to manage symptoms, and how to prevent spreading the infection to a partner.

Talking about testing with a partner might feel awkward, but it’s one of the most responsible things you can do. Our team can help you prepare for these conversations with practical suggestions and educational resources, including:

  • Guidance on protective methods, including condoms and available vaccines
  • Information on preventive tools like PrEP for those with elevated HIV risk
  • Strategies for regular check-ins based on your age, activity level, and relationship changes

Every body is different. What works for someone else might not be what works for you. The best way to stay protected is to stay informed.
