What Is Group Prenatal Care?

Group prenatal care is a model where small groups of expectant mothers, often with similar due dates, come together for regular prenatal appointments. Each session includes clinical assessments, educational discussions, and time to ask questions and share insights with one another.

We follow the evidence-based Centering Pregnancy curriculum, a nationally recognized model of group prenatal care.

These sessions are led by one of our providers and typically include 8 to 10 participants. Instead of repeating the same information in separate visits, your provider facilitates an open conversation where you learn together and support each other along the way.

Group care covers all the medical essentials while adding something unique—shared experiences. Many women find that the friendships formed in these sessions become lasting connections that continue long after delivery and into parenthood.

The Benefits of Group Prenatal Care

This model offers a number of advantages that support both your physical and emotional well-being throughout pregnancy.

  • Increased Confidence and Education: You will gain a deeper understanding of what to expect, how to prepare for labor, and how to care for yourself and your baby. The group setting allows for more time to engage in discussions that often go beyond the exam room.
  • Improved Health Outcomes: Research shows that group prenatal care may contribute to a lower risk of preterm birth in some groups, higher rates of breastfeeding, and greater patient satisfaction with the overall care experience.
  • More Time with Your Provider: These sessions typically run longer than traditional appointments, giving you extended face time with a provider while still receiving individual check-ups.

Of course, a massive benefit to these group sessions is that you are surrounded by others who are going through the same changes and challenges, creating a natural space to feel heard, understood, and encouraged.

Prenatal Classes, Education, and Physical Therapy

In addition to group sessions, select women’s health centers offer more individualized prenatal classes designed to build your confidence around labor, delivery, and the early postpartum period. These classes may include:

  • Labor and Delivery Insight
  • Breathing Techniques and Relaxation Strategies
  • Hands-on Guidance for Caring for Your Newborn
  • Post-Partum Recovery

In addition to these individualized classes, you may want to look into clinics that offer prenatal physical therapy. This is ideal for those facing pregnancy-related back pain, pelvic pressure, or tension. Prenatal physical therapy may help ease those symptoms and improve your mobility.

Sessions are designed with safety and comfort in mind, and your provider can recommend a plan based on your symptoms and stage of pregnancy.
