What to Expect During My Annual Gynecologist Appointment
During an annual gynecologist appointment, your provider will ask questions about your health, any symptoms you may be experiencing, and whether your health goals have changed over the year. They may also recommend preventative testing and complete a physical exam.
- Gynecological Exam
A gynecological exam, also known as a pelvic exam, is a common part of an annual appointment. This exam offers your provider an opportunity to determine the health of your reproductive organs. They will examine your pelvic area internally and externally for abnormalities, irritations, bumps, and signs of cancer or sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Your provider will do their best to keep you comfortable and walk you through the exam, so you know what to expect. - Pap Smear
Your provider will decide on the frequency of pap smears based on your age, health, and results of previous pap smears. It is recommended for people beginning in their early 20s and is considered preventative testing to catch signs of cervical cancer early.
During your pelvic exam, your provider will use a swab to collect cells from your cervix. These cells will be reviewed in a lab for signs of precancerous or cancerous cells. - Clinical Breast Exam
Depending on your age and risk factors, your provider may recommend a clinical breast exam during your appointment. This exam can identify lumps, abnormalities, and signs of irritation on and around your breasts.
Your provider can also show you how to perform this exam on yourself at home so you can monitor your breast health in between appointments.
