Dr. Mitchum grew up on James Island and graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2009 with a degree in Chemistry and a minor in Medical Ethics. She went on to obtain her medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. She completed her residency training at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX.

Dr. Mitchum has special interest in minimally invasive surgery. She is certified in Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery and received the Excellence in Minimally Invasive Surgery Award amongst her residency colleagues. She also has special interest in adolescent gynecology and loves obstetrics!

She and her husband, Phillip, love the outdoors. In her time away from the hospital, you can find her out on the water, camping, running or spending time with her family.

Dr. Monica Mitchum is an excellent physician. She is caring, takes the time to answer my questions and is professional in every way. Her nurse, Laquanda, also took her time with me. I get anxious when I see the doctor and my blood pressure tends to increase. She was so patient with me and after giving me time to relax, my blood pressure decreased. I was also pleased with Erin who checked me in when I arrived. All in all, I highly recommend Dr. Mitchum and staff.

Pre-Operative Evaluation

When I arrived the front office informed me that Dr. Mitchum would be running late because she had a procedure that would take longer and offered an alternative Physician that I could see. I thought that was so professional and respectful of the patient. Dr. Mitchum was informative and explained everything. From the front desk receptionist, Nurses, Dr. Mitchum, and the check out receptionist everyone was professional and helpful throughout the whole visit.

With her seeing so many patients, she still has a personal connection. She came in the room and asked about me and my little ones. The youngest is delayed in speech and for her to remember the details from our last visit is remarkable. Having that warmth feeling from her and words of encouragement is appreciated. Never know what a patient is going through or feeling, so showing that you listen to them means a lot, shows that she truly cares. Charleston OBGYN has not been nothing but good to me since 2009 with all providers assigned to me!
